Essay by Chimamanda taken down from the Guardian?

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
Apparently, UK Guardian published an article written by award-winning writer Chimamanda Adichie about her struggles with depression. The Guardian later took the article down explaining that it was published in error. but the truth is, they didn't have permission from Ms Adichie to publish the article. Out of courtesy, I also took the post down. But there's been some confusion over why the article was taken down from the Guardian. Chimamanda's manager speaks:

"When a writer of Chimamanda Adichie's status writes an essay, many publications are interested in publishing it. Her agent sends the essay to a few publications. The publications indicate their interest and make various offers and proposals including how they will feature it and what they would like to accompany it (e.g. a photo shoot, an additional interview), how much they will pay for it, when they will publish it and in what section of the publication. Chimamanda then makes a decision about which publication she prefers.

Chimamanda wrote the essay about depression last year. Depression is a very important subject for her. She wanted to make sure the essay was very honest. She wanted to use the essay as a way to help people, to start a conversation about depression, particularly among Africans. Many people suffer in silence. Breaking the silence around the subject of depression can be the first step to getting better.

Many magazines and publications were interested in the essay. One of them was the Guardian. Chimamanda considered their offer and then decided she didn't want it to be published there. She felt that the Guardian was not the right place for the essay. She declined their offer, and they acknowledged in writing that she had declined.

She planned to publish the essay later this year, when she would have finished other engagements, to give her time to deliver a talk in Nigeria about depression.

She had still not finally decided which publication she would go with when she discovered on Sunday that the essay had been published in the Guardian, with no notice, no permission, nothing. She was shocked.

The Guardian claims it was a technical error. It is not clear how something could have been published, with photographs, due to a technical error. It is possible that The Guardian deliberately published it even though they had been turned down. That way, The Guardian could claim to have been first to publish Africa's most-internationally recognized novelist writing for the first time on the very personal subject of depression. The Guardian's action was unethical and possibly illegal. The Guardian has apologized and removed the essay.

The essay will be republished properly later this year. Chimamanda thanks all the people who have already shared their own stories of depression. She hopes that knowing you are not alone will be a source of comfort. She will speak more on the subject in the coming months.

Google Plans To Hire Security Guards As Employees, Not Contractors

Google Plans To Hire Security Guards As Employees, Not Contractors

247feeds.blogspot_3374813066_74a4827ca6_z

Google plans to hire more than 200 security guards, making them full- and part-time employees of the company, and therefore eligible for company benefits. Previously, Google’s guards were provided by an outside contractor called Security Industry Specialists.
The news was reported Friday in The Wall Street Journal and elsewhere. A company spokesperson confirmed the plans via email and sent me the following statement:
Building an in-house security team is something we are excited to do. A year ago we in-sourced the Google security operations center and we are looking forward to making these valued positions both full- and part-time Google employees.
Earlier this year, union protests at Google’s Mountain View headquarters and the downtown San Francisco Apple Store sought to draw attention to tech companies’ relationships with their guards, with a focus on low pay and lack of benefits.
However, neither Google nor SIS actually said that they’re responding to those protests. The security contractor told the Journal that the decision “was made by SIS as part of its normal business operations and then conveyed to Google.” In addition, Google says that it will continue working with SIS during the transition period

Somali troops 'capture key port town' from al-Shabab

Somali government troops backed by African Union (AU) forces have taken the last coastal stronghold of the al-Shabab Islamist group.

But the AU told the BBC the joint forces were not yet in full control of the town, and the AU had parked its heavy armour on its outskirts.
Barawe, 220km (135 miles) south-west of the capital Mogadishu, has not been run by the central government for 23 years.
The AU says al-Shabab used Barawe as a base to launch attacks on the capital.
Residents said many of the al-Qaeda-aligned militants had begun withdrawing from the key port town on Friday.

"The situation is calm, the militiamen had fled before the forces reached the town," regional governor Abdukadir Mohamed Nur said.
Al-Shabab has lost control of several towns in the past month, but still controls large swathes of territory in rural areas.
The BBC's Emmanuel Igunza says the news is a significant blow to al-Shabab because they had used Barawe as a supply route for weapons and food and as a base for a lucrative charcoal business.
The loss of Barawe - after six years under their control - comes a month after al-Shabab's leader, Ahmed Abdi Godane, was killed by a US air strike near the town. US strikes have also targeted other senior militants in and around Barawe.
The group, which is estimated to have at least 5,000 fighters, wants to overthrow the UN-backed Somali government and has imposed a strict version of Sharia in areas under its control.
Last week, a woman was stoned to death in Barawe for alleged adultery.
Correspondents say al-Shabab tends to tactically withdraw from areas when faced with a large offensive, but leaves some fighters within the civilian population to launch attacks later.

A goal in either half was enough to settle a fierce London derby at Stamford Bridge thanks to goals from Eden Hazard and Diego Costa.
Chelsea’s excellent start to the campaign continued as the Blues moved five points clear at the top of the Premier League and Jose Mourinho maintained his record of never having lost to Arsene Wenger.
An intense afternoon at the Bridge was settled by two individual pieces of brilliance. First, Hazard’s mazy run drew a foul inside the box allowing him to put us in front from the penalty spot midway through the first half, and then Cesc Fabregas, facing his old team, produced an inch-perfect pass to release Diego Costa who made no mistake with a clinical finish.
It was a hugely satisfying afternoon, but with one sour note being the head injury sustained by Thibaut Courtois in the first half. An accidental clash with Alexis Sanchez forced the Chelsea goalkeeper’s substitution, with Petr Cech excellent as his replacement.

TEAM NEWS

Jose Mourinho made just one change from the side which won in Lisbon on Tuesday night, with Cesar Azpilicueta recalled in place of Filipe Luis at left-back for his 100th Chelsea appearance.
That meant a start for Andre Schurrle alongside Oscar and Hazard, in behind Diego Costa in attack. Cesc Fabregas faced his former club for the first time as a Blue.
Arsenal, who were in Champions League action a day later than us on Wednesday beating Galatasaray 4-1 at home, started with Santi Cazorla, Jack Wilhere and Mathieu Flamini in a three-man midfield, with Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez supporting main striker Danny Welbeck.
The game was delayed by 15 minutes, with Arsenal captain Per Mertesacker opting to switch ends having won the toss. That meant Chelsea unusually attacking the Matthew Harding end in the first half.

FIRST HALF

The visitors started brightly and could boast the lion’s share of possession in the opening stages, the extra man in the middle seemingly providing an advantage.
An early lofted pass beyond the Chelsea defence had  Sanchez racing to beat Courto is to the ball but the goalkeeper just got there first,. The Chilean was unable to avoid making contact and his thigh hit Courtois’ head hard, temporarily rendering him unconscious. After treatment he looked okay to continue but was forced off soon after. Cech, on in his place,  received a huge ovation from the home support.
Between the injury and substitution, Chelsea improved and tempers flared on the pitch and off it, but there was little excitement.

That changed after 26 minutes, when Hazard took possession midway inside the Arsenal half and danced sublimely past two challenges before committing Laurent Koscielny into a clumsy tackle inside the box. Referee Martin Atkinson did not hesitate in pointing to the spot and cautioning the Frenchman.
Hazard assumed responsibility for the penalty and in trademark fashion stroked home into the bottom corner, sending Wojciech Szczesny the wrong way. Chelsea were in front and the Bridge was rocking.

Wilshere could have put Arsenal level when he found a clear route to goal but his first touch gave Cechthe chance to rush from his line at claim at the midfielder’s feet. For all their possession it was Arsenal’s best chance of the half.
They were doing a decent job of reaching Chelsea’s final third, but a well organised defence and poor decision making were costing the Gunners.
Jose Mourinho would be demanding more from his side in attack after the break, but satisfied with the shape the game was taking.

SECOND HALF

Arsenal started well once more, with Cazorla flashing a shot just wide of Cech’s left-hand post before the Blues were almost gifted a second goal when Hazard again got the better of Calum Chambers before crossing low into the area. Flamini cut it out but sliced his clearance onto the post and behind for a corner, which was claimed easily by Szczesny.
Just after the hour mark Wilshere saw his shot deflected behind off Fabregas. He was awarded a corner but protested vehemently that the Spaniard had handled. Atkinson said not.
Wenger introduced Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in place of Cazorla as the game entered its final quarter.Mourinho countered by replacing Schurrle, who had been quiet, with John Mikel Obi who would add another layer of protection in front of the defence.
Chelsea were looking increasingly comfortable with Arsenal’s threat and a breakaway from Diego Costa, who had to that stage been subdued, set up Hazard inside the box. The Belgian knocked the ball past his marker but from a tight angle shot high into the Shed.
Our next chance wasn’t long coming, and it would fall to the right man. Under pressure from red shirts,Fabregas played a superb pass into space beyond the Arsenal backline, and Diego Costa was on hand to compose himself and dink the ball over Szczesny into the net. Game over.

Both sides used their allotted number of subs as Arsenal sought a way back in, but Chelsea remained organised and when they did break though, Cech was on hand to prevent Lukas Podolski from scoring with a smart save at close range.
On 90 minutes Welbeck was booked for an ugly challenge on the excellent Fabregas, before Diego Costa had the chance to claim his second of the afternoon, but somehow lifted Branislav Ivanovic’s cross over the bar. He will have been pleased to see the offside flag raised just afterwards.
At the final whistle there were huge celebrations, and we now go into the international break with a healthy lead at the top of the table.
